It’s time to open up nominations for our 4th annual Top 10 Blogs for Writers contest—the blogosphere’s biggest contest for writing blogs.

  • Mrs young's blog on confident writing for me also. A true inspiration and a great prospect. makes very interesting reading.

  • One vote to http://www.edubook.com
A team of quality writers contribute their expert knowledge on a daily basis.

  • I nominate 3000 Messages, a blog that gives useful writing advice and interesting tips that everyone can use to get their message across. The address is www.3000messages.com

  • I want to nominate 3000messages: http://3000messagesblog.com/

This is a great resource for writers in all fields. They share things in a way that's fun.

  • I nominate 3000messages: http://3000messagesblog.com/

They offer practical advice for writers in all fields--a great resource for anyone in the working world.

  • Elizabeth

I would like to nominate http://3000messagesblog.com/ Each new blog is witty, funny, and gives the reader tangable ways to immeadiately improve their writing skills. The blogs are relevant to today, with real life examples that I can relate to, and the site is beautifully designed and written.

  • GERI GRASVIK

I NOMINATE WWW.STORYFIX.COM. GREAT LEADERSHIP FOR ASPIRING WRITERS. INSPIRES GOOD CREATIVE THINKING!

  • David Smith

Definitely www.storyfix.com. The most practical advice for novelists and screenwriters.

  • rkt

A blog I've only recently found that seems to be growing by leaps and bounds is Larry Brook's storyfix.com. Very in-depth and still enjoyable.

  • Karen Gilb

For great "nuts and bolts" information on story structure, it's definitely www.storyfix.com.

  • With over 200 comments, it looks like all my faves have been covered include Jane Friedman's There Are No Rules, Christina Katz The Writer Mama http://thewritermama.wordpress... and many others.

  • It looks like no one has mentioned Rachelle Gardener, Literary Agent's blog. She provides great advice for writers. http://cba-ramblings.blogspot....

  • christinakatz

I nominate There Are No Rules by Jane Friedman. Sometimes tough, always specific and relevant. Definitely worth adding to your RSS feed. http://blog.writersdigest.com/...

  • Hi Michael, I'd like to nominate the Aspiring Mangaka and Writer's Club at http://amwc.wordpress.com.

As an editor myself, I feel that it's really easy to help people who are already good in writing to improve. However, it's so much harder when you have high school students or people who haven't had much experience in writing as your blog audience.

And I think that's what sets the AMWC blog apart from other writing blogs... It's not just a blog for writers who already know how to write, but more of a one-stop writing resource blog for young student-writers...

For its originality, for the commendable job that it's done in gaining readership among its target audience, and for the inspiration that it offers very young writers... I think the AMWC deserves the much-coveted award... :)

  • malc

I would like to nominate the Aspiring Mangaka and Writer's Club @ http://amwc.wordpress.com

I think it is a great information source for people who wish to produce content and get their works published.

The niche nature of the blog also resulted in more specific, and useful, information being shared.

  • I would like to give my vote to AMWC as well. Great local community - perhaps one of few for this particular country, Singapore.

What sets it apart from other writing blogs is its unique local perspective. Moon sheds light on the quixotic traits of Singapore's publishing industry and provides practical tips for aspiring writers wanting to get published.

Love the guest posts and interviews as well. Moon consistently attempts to get an outsider's perspective onto the blog, and I appreciate that.

  • Men Without pens. Gotta love that site and the post about comments is one of my all time faves.

  • maeil

    Salutations from Singapore!
I nominate a local, non-profit blog, the Aspiring Mangaka & Writers club; http://amwc.wordpress.com/

The blog's frequently updated with the latest topics & sayings of the self-publishing world, for literary & visual works, and has the initiative to bring in guest writers to share their experiences or tips- done all for us, the aspiring!
So it doesn't matter if you're a novice writer or a published veteran; AMWC has the news you could use.

  • I second the nomination of AMWC http://amwc.wordpress.com/.

  • I third the nomination of AMWC.

  • Trish

    I recommend Story Fix - www.storyfix.com

Larry's advice is the most useful, straight forward writing advice I've ever seen. It's an MFA program in blog form. In short, it rocks!

  • Aprove

    Sent from my iPod Touch

  • maeil

(my apologies, submitted in wrong box)

  • carolynsheppard

    Hi

I nominate Nadine Laman's blog - www.nadinelaman.blogspot.com - she did an incredible 'blog party' last month giving away books, increasing site visits for all the particpating authors, and increasing their sales too! Check out August to look back at the posts, some of which have 80 or more comments.

  • sophiew

I took some time to make this decision. I visit many of the above-mentioned blogs & they should all be required reading for freelance writers. I'm going to go with the one that is most useful and the longest running, Freelance Writing Jobs. Deborah Ng has no agenda beyond the obvious: to share, educate and assist. If she's blogging to land sales or business it's not obvious. She's doing it for the love and it shows. Freelance Writing Jobs is one of the oldest writing blogs for a reason, continuous quality content and a blogger who cares more about helping freelancers find work than finding her own customers.

  • I'll like to nominate my "The Aspiring Mangaka & Writers Blog" at http://amwc.wordpress.com. It provides tips for both writers and mangaka (artists in the Japanese style of comic drawing) and its Virtual Book Tour Series encourages local (Singaporean) creators to promote their own work.

  • Sam Hall

    My nomination for best blog:
    http://writersontherise.wordpr....

Excellent info, timely, not re-hashes, professionally done.

  • J. Goldbeck

I nominate writers on the rise, http://writersontherise.wordpr....

They offer a variety of articles to fit the readers interests and needs.

  • J. Goldbeck
  • I nominate Storyfix.com and Larry Brooks' no-nonsense commentary on the practice and art of writing.

  • Debbie Burke

storyfix.com by Larry Brooks. Heavy with content, lots of clear concrete examples given to illustrate his points.

  • Bob Olds

I would like to nominate Storyfix.com in the top ten blogs contest. I have been receiving it for a few weeks and find each blog to contain something very helpful for me in my effort to write my first novel. I am not only impressed with the information and advice Larry Brooks has to offer, but also the writing style, which makes reading the blogs so interesting.

  • I'd like to nominate http://storyfix.com by Larry Brooks. If inspiration is a light bulb, Larry's clearly defined concept of Story Architecture is a 5 million candle spot light. It's helped me further solidify my current WIP and suss out what was missing from several backburner projects. It's simply changed the way I look at story, absolutely for the better. A must read for all writers.

  • jbarwriter

    http://storyfix.com/

Story Fix by Larry Brooks his knowledge of the craft writing, insight, and well constructed for the aspiring writer.

  • Dale Smith

I'd like to nominate Larry Brooks's terrific website, storyfix.com. Larry has a deep understanding of story architecture and shares his knowledge in an easy to understand and very useful series of articles there. Recommended.

  • lakshminl

Mridu Khullar's blog (http://www.mridukhullar.com/jo.... I look forward to starting my day with her post. Nobody talks about the freelance writing business like she does. If you are novice freelance writer willing to learn the tricks of the trade, this is the place you should turn to.

Most of all, she makes it sound so effortless.

  • lauraleemoss

    Freelance Writing Jobs Network www.freelancewritinggigs.com

This blog is easy to understand and honest. As a newbie, I learned much and as I progress, I still learn from it.

  • tracyweil

I nominate Drew Myron's Blog Off the Page: http://drewmyron.com/main.htm

It's thoughtful, inspiring and keeps me coming back for more. Drew's blog has something to say, it's award winning for sure!

  • djwoods

I second (or hopefully 200) the nomination for Deb Ng's www.freelancewritinggigs.com. What a great source for advice and gigs.

  • Drema Drudge

Here's an awesome blog: http://writersontherise.wordpr... . It really is worth checking out! I can't tell you how many sales I've had based on ideas I've read from this blog. Kudos!

  • I nominate www.storyfix.com

If you have writing aspirations, www.storyfix.com by Larry Brooks is a must read.

Brooks will make you smile while making you think. And, readers who follow even some of his tips, will become better writers. I personally can attest to the effectiveness of Brooks' advice. The novels I wrote while taking classes from him, unlike the previous six, got published.

  • joshuampatton

I would like to nominate Freelance Writing Jobs by Deb Ng. It has the most comprehensive list of tips and job listings that I have found on the web for the freelance writer of any kind. All of the promising leads I have found in the last three months have come from FWJ.

    www.freelancewritinggigs.com

  • I have to nominate the Freelance Writing Jobs Blog Network (http://www.freelancewritinggig...). I have been able to avoid falling for scam artists and working for peanuts because of the advice from this site. As a new freelancer, FWJ has been the ultimate source for everything from writing tips to handling unreasonable clients- absolute perfection.

  • simonjjames

I nominate the Freelance Writing Jobs Network (http://www.freelancewritinggig... as Deb has made it a personal crusade to be helpful and an authority on the good bits and not so good bits of finding freelancing gigs. Essential for Freelancers.

  • Fred Strauss

I nominate Drew Myron's "Off The Page". You'll enjoy the journey, search, and tumbled dryer ease.

  • I nominate http://www.writingpays.biz/. Nicole has some great tips to help new writers out! She also teaches courses on how to become a writer.

  • nicolelamarco

    Thank you, Gail!

  • neilwb

I'd like to nominate Michelle Rafter's "Word Count -- Freelancing in the Digital Age." Great, practical advice for working writers.

    http://michellerafter.wordpres...

  • Maggie K. Rayner

I nominate Laurie Pawlik-Kienlen's Tips and Quips for Freelance Writers (url http://theadvernturouswriter.c... I love her work. I often use her site as a "How To" reference.

  • I have recently visited http://glocalwriters.com
It might not be that competitive as of now but it has really come a big way during last 2 months; currently it's all set to make an entry into top 1.00 lakh site on alexa...it's worth mentioning and following.

  • amccanta

I nominate Off the Page by Drew Myron (http://drewmyron.com/main.htm). Drew's lovely blog, which combines art with words, allows me as both a reader and fellow writer to remove the constraint of writing boxes. Every blog post helps me soar.

  • christianwebb

I nominate The Sharing Hub: http://xianaaron.com/wordpress... it is prolific and touching. An inspirational site.

  • I nominate Larry Brooks' terrific Story Fix blog (www.storyfix.com). I've been writing "intuitively" for years; Larry's blog is introducing me to method, process, and techniques, and I'm suddenly doing new things and better things. He's a terrific writer and he's helping me reach my potential. Intelligent, full of examples, helpful. (That's talking about him, not me!) Focused on fiction, terrific even for non-fiction. Truly good stuff, a real gift.

  • I shamelessly nominate my own Writing to be Read blog on Today.com: http://writingtoberead.today.c...
I feel that it should be nominated because I go to great effort to have posts that are either informative or entertaining or both. I feel the information that I include there can be beneficial to all writers. For example, my most recent post was on Self Promotion of Your writing, with some very helpful tips from several noted authors and writers included. Check it out for yourself and see if you don't agree.

  • firstkyne

    I nominate Dirty White Candy
    http://www.dirtywhitecandy.com...
It is concise, witty, and inspirational. Roz Morris' professionalism shows. You can tell she's wrestled with the dilemmas she provides answers to. It shows in the freshness of her ideas, and the encouragment she provides. This blog has helped me far more than any other to date.

  • mikeybrand

At the top of the Men with Pens website it says "WordPress Customization, Website Copywriting and Web Design." Since they have so many nods and it's obvious they're not fully a blog for writers (especially judging by all of Harry's "your blog sucks because it's not like mine" posts), I'm going to give my vote for Freelance Switch. (http://freelanceswitch.com) Like Men with Pens they're not a writing blog but they have helpful stuff for writers all the same.

  • mariblaser

I nominate http://inkygirl.com for great writing advices, personal and witty insights on publishing industry, and the funniest cartoons ever!

  • I nominate Wordcount by Michelle Rafter-http://michellerafter.w...

Always useful and relevant information. The perfect example of what a blog should be used for.

  • I nominate Debbie Ridpath Ohi's blog — "Daily Diversions for Writers" — because writers need to laugh! The comics are original and spot on.

    http://www.inkygirl.com/

    Sandra Gulland
    http://www.sandragulland.com/

  • I nominate Men With Pens (menwithpens.ca)

These guys don't just write a blog about writing. They actually write copy for clients, as well as design websites.

Their advice is worthwhile because they're actually doing, on a daily basis, what they talk about. Some writing bloggers, I wonder how often they actually do write for customers (and get paid).

With MWP, I know they're the real deal. And, they touch on everything: how to write better, how to run a writing business, why customer service is so important (and how to practice it well), and so on.

  • Jan Buck

I nominate Quips and Tips for Successful Writers: http://theadventurouswriter.co...

Interesting topics, good guests, easy to read.

  • I nominate http://menwithpens.ca/

It's a wealth of information, easy access in the Q&A arena, and a highly entertaining style of writing. Seriously! This is important--I remember more when I'm laughing!

  • She has my vote, too - Quips & Tips for Writers. Laurie P-K lets me vent about my constants rejection letters, and keeps me motivated.
    http://theadventurouswriter.co...

Thanks for this contest -- it's been great to see who else is out there!

  • I nominate Michelle Rafter's Word Count -- Freelancing in the Digital Age
    http://michellerafter.wordpres...

Consistently interesting, forward thinking, and thought provoking.

  • I nominate Michelle Rafter's Word Count --Freelancing in the Digital Age
    http://michellerafter.wordpres...

Consistently interesting, forward thinking, and thought provoking.

  • deepti17

  • Shannon

My vote goes to Quips and Tips Successful Writers http://theadventurouswriter.co... . I like the way she writes, and I like that her tips are practical and encouraging.

  • I nominate- Storyfix

    http://www.storyfix.com

Larry Brooks is the real deal. The site is informative, witty and above all it has helped me in my journey to becoming a writer. So when it comes down to "who's the best" there's no competition.

  • SilentShe

I'd like to vote for Iain Broome's writers blog: http://writeforyourlife.net .

I read to know I am not alone.

    ;-)
    x

  • Collective Inkwell, of course.

    http://collectiveinkwell.com/

Fresh new talent and writing that's different than anything I've ever seen on the Web.

  • bloodwork

    I nominate www.storyfix.com

It's fun, lively, and very informative

  • I would like to nominate "How Publishing Really Works".

    http://howpublishingreallywork...

There are many fantastic blogs out there for writers, but Jane Smith's site is so all-encompasing that is deserves to be nominated. She gives invaluable advice for the newbie writer and the established author. Her posts are varied and cover everything from writing that manuscript to publication. She regularly hands over posts to people in the industry in order to pass on more information, and she is second to none in trying to protect people from the sharks in the business.

  • Col

    I nominate

    http://www.readthismagazine.co...

Claire Askew brings exposure and guidance to new and emerging poets, and is deserving in inclusion of this list.

  • Col

    I nominate http://www.readthismagazine.co...
For all her tireless work supporting and guiding new and emerging poets, Claire Askew, deserves many thanks.

  • Col

    I nominate http://www.readthismagazine.co...
For all her tireless work supporting and guiding new and emerging poets, Claire Askew, deserves many thanks.

  • I nominate Quips And Tips to be included in the top 10. Her blog is at http://www.theadventurouswrite... I thoroughly enjoy her writing; it is detailed and articulate, offering writing motivation, instruction, experience and by example(s). She makes you want to read more and isn't that what a writer is supposed to do? She makes you want to write and actually submit more too and isn't that what a successful blog for writers is supposed to do? Yes and Yes!!

I follow her on twitter too @QuipsAndTips. She gets my vote, absolutely!!

  • My vote goes to Collective Inkwell by Sean Platt and David Wright. They are a dynamic duo who write and design amazing blogs. (Collective Inkwell is just one example of their exemplary work.)

A true inspiration to other creative types, Collective Inkwell shows the awesomeness that occurs when two top-notch talents explore new horizons.

  • I read http://therenegadewriter.com/ regularly. I like the business angle they have.

  • TrinaMb

I nominate Collective Inkwell at http://collectiveinkwell.com for they have effectively created a collaborative site to both inspire and motivate writers and all who wish to create.
Together, Sean and Dave offer solid tips, entertain the masses and know how to include and build community.

  • I passionately nominate http://collectiveinkwell.com

Sean Platt and David Wright have formed an inspiring body of posts that have inspired writers from all walks of life - with shop talk along also creative writing stories.

I have personally been so deeply inspired by CollectiveInkwell, that I chose to close my online ecommerce business and pursue my life long passion to write.

How's THAT for an unbelievably excellent and life changing writer's blog!? That is the power of words at it's best.

    That should win, hands-down.

  • Kelly from MCE said:

    "That's easy. Men WithPens - menwithpens.ca

Because they're consistently amazing me with the level of thought they put into their tips and tricks, because they raise the bar all the time with guest posts that add tremendously to their scope, and because they reach right through the screen and grab you with their warm, personal writing style."

    And I agree completely.

  • nora123

    I nominate Jane Smith's excellent http://howpublishingreallywork...

She's too clued-up for her own good, and makes sure the rest of us are too.

  • vanessagebbie

I would like to nominate How Publishing Really Works, Jane Smith's honest and helpful site.
    www.howpublishingreallyworks.b...

This blog pulls no punches. It explores relevant issues from all sides and allows comments from all those who have anything to say on the topic concerned - positive and negative.

The owner, Jane Smith, appears particularly keen not to show bias. If there is a debate, she will act as fair referee, stepping in when there is a need.

Organisations and individuals that are proven to be working against the best interests of writers and the accredited publishing world in general get short shrift - links are given and these are exposed.

The blog was the hub of a recent organised 'anti-plagiarism' series, in which writers and publishers, editors and competition organisers were able to air their views and experiences, with the aim of increasing awareness of the dangers of plagiarists/plagiarism throughout the writing industry.

  • Kathryn.

    Writeforyourlife

This blog doesn't overfill with text. IT cuts to the quick and helps the reader and writer to focus on the important issues of grappling with the difficulties of writing. IT's humorous, has tons of feedback adding yet more helpful suggestions.
    A top writer's site.
    http://writeforyourlife.net/ho...

  • Jeff

The best blog I have seen on writing in general is http://victoriamixon.com. Victoria's experience as a technical writer and editor in Silicon Valley along with her insights over a long writing career make her posts very insightful. The blog is oriented toward fiction, but the basic concepts are relevant to any type of writing, including white papers and articles.

  • Dave Fowler

    Hello Michael,

    I nominate Collective Inkwell.

David and Sean present a vibrant and exciting site based around a solid community of creative people. The Collective Inkwell has recently undergone a design change and looks clean and sharp to reflect the quality of the content. The authors both enjoy individual success with their own sites, but at The Inkwell, the power of creative collaboration is plain to see.

    Thanks
    Dave Fowler

  • I'm nominating Writer's Edge, by Georganna Hancock
    http://www.writers-edge.info/B...

A splendid site for all phases of writing and publishing. Georganna gives practical and timely advice laced with wit. She is on the cutting edge of the industry, sharing what she knows with those lucky enough to have discovered and loved her blog!

  • I nominate Matt Baron's PR blog, Inside Edge (http://insideedgepr.blogspot.c.... Insightful, interesting--and I'm not even in PR.

  • About Freelance Writing and FreelanceWritingGigs are the two I'm hooked on. Great advice as well as job leads.

    Carol Tice

  • Guest

Writer's Edge gets my vote. Georganna's insightful, encouraging, and educational blog is just what writer's need to get on in their path to publication.

    http://www.writers-edge.info/B...

  • Manuela

I nominate Iain Broome's blog 'Write for your life' http://writeforyourlife.net It's new to the blogosphere this year and has really built community in a short space of time. Plus it's original, a little leftfield and genuinely funny.

  • Zelah

I would also like to nominate Nail Your Novel by Roz Morris at http://www.dirtywhitecandy.com...

There's some really useful and thought provoking stuff on there. Especially handy for people who have got so far and then got stuck or who are trying to re-write and wondering if they've made any classic errors or missed out on something they could have made more of.

  • Tim

    I'm with Dermotbolton - I really like Morris's blog: http://www.nailyournovel.com/

  • professorsaxton

May I also nominate Nail Your Novel, by the delightful Roz Morris.

    http://www.nailyournovel.com/

I cannot recommend her blog highly enough, it being quite splendid.

  • dermotbolton

I nominate Nail your Novel by Rox Morris.
