Video: New Computer Glasses Promise to Reduce Eyestrain

By Michael Stelzner

First, happy new year everyone! I was going to do one of those, “What are your plans for 2009?” messages but got carried away setting up my new YouTube account (but I still want to hear your resolutions…). Now to the video:

If you’re like me, you get headaches when you stare at the screen all day long.

Well for Christmas, I picked up some new technology that promises to address this problem. These are computer glasses called, Gunnar Optiks.

Watch the video below to learn more.

What are your thoughts?

BTW, this is my FIRST YouTube video. I welcome your comments (should I do more??)

Hello Michael! I stumbled upon your video and 'm glad I did. I've been looking for ways to protect my eyes because I use the computer a lot. I had no idea I can buy glasses just for this. I already placed an order and I hope to try out my new glasses in a few weeks. Thanks for the review and keep making videos. You're a natural!

  • Really interested in this - I'm worried about my eyes going funny as I stare at the computer all day at work and then go home and stare at the computer at home a bit more ;)
  • I like how the glasses look. But yes, I believe in taking breaks every once in awhile to rest my eyes.
  • Great ! I will add this to my bookmarks. TY
  • Thank you so much for the info. I'm going to try the glasses.

  • I face this very problem every day as stay at my computer almost all the day long. No breaks help me. Finally, your post convinced to get these computer glasses. Hope they will decrease the eyestrain indeed. Thanks for the video.
  • Mitchell - You're pretty funny :) - Mike
  • I simply sprayed PAM® on my monitor.
Not only has my eyestrain disappeared (I can't see a thing!), the aroma of a sizzling cathode ray tube is pleasing to me.

However, as I can no longer work with this monitor, I will try the Gunnar Optiks next time.

    Thanks, Mike!
Your video was fine, I poured honey into my speakers recently, in order to increase their dulcet tones. As a result, I couldn't hear a word you said.
But I read lips, so my tip: stop putting your hands in front of your face, okay?

    Cheers,

    Mitch

  • The same sort of stuff resurfaces every year or so about eye strain. My mother always says give your eyes a rest, and thats all there is to it !
There are always going to be some Doctors who say computers or T.Vs are bad for your eyes and others who say it is simply tiredness.
  • Jacques - Spoke to an eye doctor friend at church yesterday and he said he carries these in his office and one of the fellow doctors in his practice loves them. He said the curvature thing is nothing to worry about. - Mike
  • OK, thanks for that Michael. It just sounds a bit odd that one's eyes have to readjust after wearing these glasses. Remember doctors endorsing tobacco all those years ago!

    Regards

    Jacques
  • Hi Jacques;

Interestingly, this is no longer happening. I saw a video with a eye doc and he seemed to say that this can actually help your eyes (wearing these things).

  • Hiya Michael, and all the very best for 2009! The fact that flat screens seem curved after wearing the glasses seem quite odd. Are you sure that these things can not lead to permanent damage? I find that regularly looking away from the monitor, and focusing on objects outside the window helps a lot towards alleviating eye-strain.
  • Interesting.

I like the idea of regular breaks.

I also like the idea for making the most of the time I spend at the screen.

  • The video looks good. :) Just had a bit of trouble with the audio though as the volume was rather low while I was watching.

  • What is interesting about these glasses is they are curved to wrap around your face. It creates a small feeling that the monitor is curved. Eventually the eyes compensate for that.

However, when I take the glasses off and look at the monitor, it looks curved and its a flat screen!
  • Thanks Michael - Good stuff here!
  • Our eyes and vision were designed for viewing distance as hunters and gatherers, and not for ongoing near work as required by regular computer use. As a result, Computer Eye Strain is becoming one of the major eye complaints heard by eye doctors today.

Symptoms can include increased myopia, blurred vision, headaches, slow refocusing, difficulty concentrating, neck, shoulder and back pain

Eye strain can be reduced significantly by taking regular breaks from the computer, resting your eyes, stretching and doing eye exercises.

For a demo of 3 great eye exercises by Dr. Grossman, one of the Country's leading behavioral optometrists, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W10j2fL0hy0

Dr. Grossman also offers his free eye exercise booklet at his website at Natural Eye Care Free Eye Exercises with his 11 favorite eye exercises and acupressure eye points to massage regularly.

Finally, there is also an excellent section at his website on "Computer Eye Strain" under "Eye Diseases" that provides a Computer Eye Strain “Self-Help“ section with great tips of relieving eyestrain due to computer use.
