The Power of a Customer’s Voice

By Michael Stelzner

Hey “Big Company,” listen up. It’s really true that your customers have an amazing amount of power.

Here’s my case in point.

I recently noticed a whole bunch of responses coming in to my post entitled, “My Customer Service Nightmare With Capital One,” from Jan. 2nd of 2008. In the last 3 or 4 days, about 4 people have shared their nightmare’s with Capital One here.

So I decided to do a little Google search on the words Captial One Customer Service.

Guess what came up number 4?  This blog and my story.

What’s the point? Whenever anyone is looking for customer service information from Capital One, up comes my story and the stories of about 20 other people.

I’m sure Capital One would prefer that information “not” to be so readily available, but it is.  SO, “Big Company,” be sure you treat your customers right AND respond.

  • Customer Service is a vital part of any business and to be effective, it must be sincere and focused. Too many companies today confuse customer service with hard sell opportunities and that creates a negative perception of that business with the customer.

    Mike:

I'm always conviced that customers expectations are not always professional. Their voices can sound supportive to your white paper only when writing something that is connected to their own expectations.
Contrary to that your paper appear as unprofessional to them. It is up to you to balance according to your editorial line that gouverns your legal commitments.

I was watching Dave Ramsey's show on Fox Business last night, and there was a person on the phone with Dave who had a problem with Capital One. COne sent this person a letter stating that if the person didn't pay the money owed, ( $300) they would go into the customer's checking account and take it.

I also have a friend, who tried to cancel her account with Capital One and they wouldn't let her. It took numerous phone calls and letters to get them to cancel her account. And this was years ago.

    Just two more examples.
