Questions about white papers?

February 4th, 2008, by Michael Stelzner

I have a question for you: What questions do you have about white papers?

What are you struggling with when it comes to writing or marketing white papers?

Any question is a good one. Is there something about the process of creating white papers, how to sell them and so on that you find difficult. No question is too simple or too grand.

I greatly value your comments. They will directly impact future posts on this blog.

I wrote my first White Paper about two weeks ago regarding Web 2.0 and its impact for our client - not only did I know nothing about writing a White Paper, I also knew nothing about Web 2.0. Information about the subject was vague, promotional and difficult to comprehend, due to the jargon surrounding the concept. The first draft was rejected, siting my paper was “too negative”. The second draft was submitted, without any feedback whatsoever.

I took great pains to research something I didn’t understand; in addition to that the guidelines about writing this were vague from management.

Needless to say, its frustrating, and do not know if the second draft will be the end of my career here. I hope that isn’t the case, but suspect that the person I am working with expects me to mirror them down to the last jot and tittle. Any advice?

My question is in regards to distributing and marketing white papers. I understand that a copy should go to exisiting clients and any prospects. Is there anywhere a white paper can be “published” or put on the web that will attract more readers?

By the way, your blog is a must read! Thanks for everything.
