I'd like to nominate Writers on the Rise. I love them.
  • Michael Downend
Tom Colvin's BECOMING-A-WRITER-SERIOUSLY is by far the best writer's resource on the web. I speak from experience; I've been around since Tim Berners-Lee created this marvel of a world wide web--back when I was working on a Mac Plus with 8megs of RAM. BAWS is to writers as Snap-On is to mechanics. There's a tool for everything and not just virtually worthless add-ons that serve no real function. I have yet to find a link in BAWS that doesn't provide writers of all stripes--novelists, short story writers, screenwriters, TV scribes, the non-fiction cadre , journalists, playwrights, poets--take your pick--with a serious, useful tool to help lighten the load of the mechanical stuff so the writer can get on with the serious business of creating. BECOMING-A-WRITER-SERIOUSLY is the best in the business.
  • As a new freelancer, I find Anne Wayman's Golden Pencil a great resource She should be at the top of the list!
  • I'm not sure how many nominations Tom Colvin now has, but I did want to add him to the list:

    http://becoming-a-writer-seriously.com/

Not only have I found some gems in his reviews, but he's also very personable and active in his community. He fully understands that blogging is a conversation, and his voice is a valuable addition to the discussion.
  • Doug Danielson
I second Jim Faelker’s post and nominate Tom Colvin’s Blog:
    http://www.becoming-a-writer-seriously.com/
Tom is part of our writers group down here in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and I know how hard he works keeping his blog up to date, monitoring everything in print and on the internet that pertains to writing. ‘Saves the rest of us ex-pats a lot of valuable time.
  • Thanks everyone for your nominations!
  • Definitely Freelance Writing Jobs!
  • www.freelancewritinggigs.com gets my nomination too!
  • Cassidy
I'd like to submit Freelance Writer's Exchange for this contest. I just love this site because she writers informative information in a personal way. Somehow I always feel like she is talking to me
  • Definitely Deb Ng at http://freelancewritinggigs.com.
She is a awesome writer, very helpful and encouraging and is great about answering questions.
  • I would like to nominate Deb Ng from http://freelancewritinggigs.com. She has been very supportive of me when I needed to find more writing jobs. She has given me extremely helpful advice when she had nothing to gain from it. She has become a good friend through all of this and her site is so valuable to us writers. I don't know what I would have done without her.
  • Deb Ng from http://freelancewritinggigs.com/. One her site is a classic off of which many others are based but her blog is the original and best. Two, I've found more jobs there than most other places, and three Deb is one cool cat -- she's nice to other writers and supports writers/blogger rights and payment issues which I like.
  • I would like to nominate http://www.becoming-a-writer-seriously.com
This blogger, Tom Colvin, monitors over 100 blogs and websites searching out the best information for writers who wish to be more productive. He shares his findings and also writes helpful commentaries of his own. After reading his blog, I feel truly up-to-date.
  • Ben
I would like to nominate http://catalystblogger.blogspot.com/ I have been thoroughly enjoyed reading it and it comes from the pure writers perspective and the ups and downs of being a freelance web copywriter today.
  • Lenore Keenan
Please accept one more nomination for http://freelancewritinggigs.com - Deborah Ng has provided the single most useful resource for writers -and the only writing blog I visit anymore.
  • Sheila
I'd like to vote for www.jcme.ca. I live in the States but watch out for this Canadian blog from time to time. I like the friendly and casual manner, and I actually take note of the resources that James and Harry mention - not really for me but for my daughter. When there are leads for freelance writers I put it on my "list for Gaby." Gaby's my daughter who'll soon be off to university and will be majoring in communications. While there, I'd like her to earn some money of her own by writing freelance. I think blogs should have a specific purpose and that's to help others find resources. So instead of just pure rambling, I think James and Harry have something to offer readers."
  • Tina
I would like to nominate this blog : http://thematurekid.com. It is a blog site about the US curriculum. The author is a former public teacher. I like the content. It's direct to the point and has given us parents insights about the curriculum that our kids receive from public school!
    Thank you!
  • I nominate Courtney at Web Writing Info.
  • LS
I nominate http://webwritinginfo.com/ also. She has lots of good information there for PLR writing and marketing.
  • kim
I nominate Courtnee at webwritinginfo.com. She is providing a massive wealth of information!
  • I nominate Courtney at Web Writing Info. Courtney has really been stepping it up on her blog, offering fellow writers juicy info on how to improve their writing and how to make more money writing for the web. http://webwritinginfo.com/
  • Gaylen Taylor
    I nominate Elizabeth Lucas-Taylor's blogs at http://www.myspace.com.elucastaylor

Her blogs are informative and cover writer interests that are of value to a seasoned writer as well as those up and coming. She is very friendly too, and answers additional questions by email. Very helpful.
  • I'd like to nominate The Renegade Writer blog, which always has great, practical tips for being a more productive and more-frequently-published writer; great ideas; and inspiration whenever you need it.
  • willwriteforshoes
I would like to nominate: http://www.copywritingmaven.com/
  • I nominate therenegadewriter.com -- the best web site for writers, hands down. These renegade ladies are always in-the-know and no-nonsense. They also make a special point to contact their readers personally, which is a really special thing, considering their tremendous following. These writers, Diana and Linda, totally rock.
  • Can direct mail copywriting actually be--gasp--fun? It is at http://youvegotjunkmail.typepad.com/.
  • I'd like to vote for Lorna and Tamara at Freelance Parent as not only do they have great tips and how-tos for everyone but they are sharing their life as an example of starting a business as a writer.
  • I vote for http://thewritermama.wordpress.com. Christina is full of insight, inspiration and is always ready to give a kick in the pants. Just what I need!
  • i'd like to nominate "ink in my coffee" at www.devonellington.wordpress.com.

inspiring, informative, educational, with real world tools to help get you on the page.
  • I am nominating Heather Strang's blog, who just so happens to be a very talented writer and one of my great friends.

You'll defintely be inspired to make positive changes in your life by her infectious energy and dedication to her trade, uh, passions. Visit it here http://heatherstrang.blogspot.com/.
  • I nominate the Renegade Writer blog! Linda and Diana are awesome and have taught me so much about the freelance writing biz.

    http://www.renegadewriter.com
  • The Renegade Writer blog - has tons of helpful advice and topics.

    http://therenegadewriter.com
  • James - We updated the blog over the last few days (security patch) and the subscribe to comments causes server errors due to the # of folks subscribed to this post. We are working on this. - Mike
  • Hm, my subscribe to comments on this thread simply... disappeared. What happened?
  • I cast my vote for Writing the Cyber Highway:
    http://writingthecyberhighway.blogspot.com/

This is a great place to get tips, markets, advice, and support! The posts are always interesting, thoughtful, and well written. Michele has put together a valuable resource for writers.
  • I'm nominating Lorna's and Tamara's http://emomsathome.com/freelance-parent/ because their advice is a good mixture of being applicable and human.
  • TK Keenan
One more vote for Deb Ng. She inspires me to write every day. She makes me laugh. She makes me think and she gives me the tools I need to make it as a freelancer.

Thanks Deb. Even if you don't get on this list, your hard work is noticed and appreciated.
  • It's taken me a while to decide just which blog I want to nominate, as there are so many that I read on a daily basis. When I really went back and searched, though, I realized that there is one that gives me more ideas and encouragment than the others. Freelance Folder is for all types of freelancers, but I think their ideas and suggestions are just great for the freelance writers among us. I constantly find myself going "ah-ha" or thinking "I'm so going to use that" when I read their posts.
  • Long time reader. I guess if we can nominate our own blogs, Ill toss mine into the ring: www.chrisblogging.com

    Thanks!
  • I'd like to nominate Dana Prince's Writer's Blog - http://danaprince.blogspot.com/. Dana chronicles the ups and downs of a freelance writing career in a very readable style and it's one of the must reads in my list of writing blogs.
  • Caroline
    The Renegade Writer blog!
    http://therenegadewriter.com
  • Copywriting Maven http://www.copywritingmaven.com/

CopyBlogger http://www.copyblogger.com. Despite Brian's modesty above the list wouldn't be complete without him.
  • So many of my favourites on this list!! While I'd love to see my blog The Writer's Blog at http://danaprince.blogspot.com nominated I'd much rather nominate Sharon Hurley Hall at http://getpaidtowriteonline.com

While I love many of the blogs on this list, Sharon's blog has most directly impacted my writing career in a positive way. I got my first several gigs in writing as a direct result of Sharon and she's been a fabulous mentor and friend.
  • Margaret Grotowski
Just has to be Roberta with Copywriting Maven - always interesting and thought provoking, besides she is a great tutorand I'm a very lucky

  • Folks - I wanted to give a big THANK YOU to all of you for your participation. - Mike
  • Greg
Amidst an inundation of pointless and grammatically butchered drivel, where the expression of opinion is too often akin to malpractice as opposed to revered entitlement, Melissa Donovan's "Writing for Writers" is among the noteworthy efforts that bring substance, application and credibility to the phenomenon we know as blogging.
  • JUST A REMINDER FOLKS:

<font size="4">Only your first nomination will be counted.</font>

    One per person please :)
  • For smart copywriting smarts and style, I nominate my good buds, Tom Chandler''s CopywriterUnderground.com

For taking effective marcomm writing to a brand-new audience, I also nominate Brian Clark at Copyblogger.com

For top notch marcomm writing and strategy, Diana Huff at http://marcom-writer-blog.com/

And for those who nominated me, thank you. I'm thrilled to simply be invited to the party ;)
  • I nominate Sharon Hurley Hall's http://getpaidtowriteonline.com/

She is a gifted writer and her posts always contain useful tips that make the world of freelancing easier to navigate.
  • I would love to see Sharon at Get Paid to Write Online. Great blog with a great design and informative posts!
  • Deb
I nominate www.jcme.ca/jcmefreelancwriting - Harry and James rock!
  • DJ Kenney
I nominated Writing for Writers (www.melissadonovan.com). Melissa's blog is timely, informative and a joy to read, for seasoned writers and newcomers to the passion.
  • Pat
It's an interesting blog with writing info and humorous entries.
  • DJ Kenney
I nominate Writing for Writers (www.melissadonovan.com). Melissa's blog is timely, informative and a joy to read, for seasoned writers and newcomers to the passion.
  • My vote goes to http://copywriterunderground.com/ - pithy, experienced and able to see past the hype that sometimes surround the brave new world of the internet.

Tom Chandler's writing is always worth reading - whether you write copy online or offline.
  • sharon
I wish to nominate the blog section of www.jcme.ca. I'm not really an avid reader of blogs, but I follow James Chartrand's and Harry McCleod's blogs for the following reasons:
    1) They are NOT selfish in sharing information. They give the impression that they'd like to give the writing community a helping hand by providing useful resources - resources you can actually use.
    2) Humor. James and Harry strike me as strange bedfellows and from time to time like to blog straight from the hip. It kind of breaks the monotony of serious blogging.
    3) Their blogs are not long and full of fluff. They're a quick read but packed with info.
    4) Entrepreneurial bent - James and Harry have blogged on many subjects and on many leads, and they're brimming with ideas and future ventures.
They're the kind of people who help writers in a genuine way, and not just in a commercial, "increase my traffic" kind of way.
    sharon
  • I'm nominating Sharon Hurley Hall at http://getpaidtowriteonline.com/. Great advice, great insight, and always happy to help a fellow writer!
  • I nominate Melissa Donovan, her blog Writing for Writers, is very good and informative.

She's really dedicating to all things dealing with writing and I've never read an entry from her that wasn't boring!
  • Loren Victory
Melissa Donovan's Writing For Writers is just that, it's writing, not preaching, or schooling or pulpit pounding. It's her voice giving advice about things we forget how to do, things we never did, and just plain old inspiration. She even names watching a movie, to get the cluttered garbage out of your head when you're blocked. Smart, smooth and written in a way everyone can relate to.

So, put it on the list.
  • I nominate Tom Chandler's blog, The Copywriter Underground.
    www.copywriterunderground.com
  • I'd like to second the nomination of Amy Derby's Write-from-home Blog. Amy's blog always contains interesting, entertaining, and helpful information for writers presented in a straightforward, honest, and down-to-earth way that every writer--particularly every freelancer--can relate to.
  • If anyone can change online marketing to remove over-hyped sales copy, I will kneel and kiss the person's feet.

That is, if they pay my plane fare...
  • I'd like to nominate http://westofmars.blogspot.com. She's an author aspiring to be published, and you get a taste of her fiction along with her own writing ups and downs.
  • I'd like to nominate Matt Ambrose at The Copywriter's Crucible (http://thewritewords.me.uk/blog/). Not just because he nominated me (thanks, Matt!), but because he is truly dedicated to changing the way online marketing is done. His blog focuses on reaching clients through informative content that gives valuable info--not just over-hyped sales messages. I think web writing could use the overhaul, and Matt deserves a nomination.
  • Another nomination for The Urban Muse (http://theurbanmuse.blogspot.com/)
  • I would like to nominate Writing the Cyber Highway Michele always gives terrific tips on writing and includes markets and other advice for writers. A great venue.
  • Thanks, Michele, for the nomination. Very sweet of you, although I don't think I'm deserving of being in the top 10.

In addition to others mentioned, I'd like to see John Hewitt's Writer's Resource Center (poewar.com) in the running. So I'd like to nominate him if I may. His blog covers everything from general freelancing to fiction to poetry writing. Great job leads, too.
  • I nominate The Urban Muse (http://theurbanmuse.blogspot.com/). I am just getting started and found her blog to be very informative, authentic and fun to read.
  • Oops! I just noticed we're requested to make a SINGLE nomination. (Sorry Michael!).

In that case, IGNORE my measly self-promotion of my blog and let my nomination go for Amy Derby's Write-from-Home blog:

    http://write-from-home.blogspot.com/

Everything from a heads up on scams, awesome PAYING writing markets, and newbie freelance writing advice to how to make money blogging, and loads of inspiration and encouragement (plus much more!) can be found at this awesome blog.
  • I'll vote for Renegade Writer.
  • I vote for www.thewritermama.wordpress.com

It's the ONLY blog I check daily. It has tons of resources and support for writers. :)
  • James C. - It's really not that complicated. Simply nominate your favorite blog for writers. - Mike
  • If I may add to my nominations, I'd love to add Kathy Kehrli's blog: http://irreverentfreelancer.blogspot.com ; Kristen King's blog: http://www.inkthinkerblog.com; and Devon Ellington's blog: http://devonellington.wordpress.com
  • I'd like to second the nomination of Roberta Rosenberg, The Copywriting Maven.

I'd like to nominate Tom Chandler of Copywriter Underground.

That guy from Copyblogger is a hack, but he's a pain when his feelings get hurt, so we'll let him stay nominated just for appearances. :)
  • I'm thinking it actually would've been good to know the definitions before we all started voting. There's quite a hodgepodge of variety of blogs here, and from one type to another, how would anyone pick they best? They vary wildly in category.

For example, Copyblogger (only gotten one vote despite having well over 25,000 loyal readers) is about online writing - a literal blog for writers. Heather Strang is a woman's experience being a writer. Freelancewritingigs is a resource-style of blog for writers. Some blogs listed here are literally FOR writers, providing advice about the profession, some blogs are BY writers, providing insight into a writer's thoughts. Some are for offline writing, some for online.

Without guidelines as to what is considered a "blog for writers", it makes it pretty hard to determine exactly what we're voting on. For me, a blog for writers is one that provides help, advice, suggestions and recommendations FOR writers without the clutter, fluff and long, verbose prose. Inspirational and motivational should figure pretty low (in my opinion). There is a huge difference between the types of content on these nominated blogs.

Anyways, this is getting a big long. My basic questions were:

What type of blog for writers are we suppposed to be nominating the best of?
What determining factors are going to be used to select a winner?
What is considered a blog for writers?
  • Oh sorry, are we only allowed one? In that case mine was Writer's Resource Centre.
  • Do MySpace blogs count? The best one I know for writers is by Elizabeth Lucas-Taylor at http://www.myspace.com/elucastaylor

She is a published author and an editor, and she posts practical, informative articles on such topics as what optioning is, how to write a synopsis, working with radio producers, how to promote your book, and so on. Invaluable!
  • Two of my regular reads have already been nominated, but the one I'd like to second is Devon Ellington's at http://devonellington.wordpress.com/. With the amount of work she puts in every day, even when she's unwell or fighting beurocracy, Devon puts the rest of us to shame.

For the record, although I'm not allowed to nominate or second 2 by the looks of it, my other regular read is Colin Galbraith's Freedom from the Mundane mentioned above.
  • Manda Panda
I would like to add to the many nominations already for http://heatherstrang.blogspot.com!!
Heather is the most phenomenal, well-rounded woman I know. Everyone should listen to her words of wisdom and life. They will no doubt benefit you.
I am proud to say she is my sister and mentor that provides much needed guidance on a daily basis to all. I love and admire you sis

  • I would like to nominate http://heatherstrang.blogspot.com/ as a Top 10 Blog for Writers (and also across ALL categories of blogs)

Heather Strang's blog is outstanding and powerful for three reasons:

    (1) It provides genuinely useful information in a way that is not merely entertaining, but also inspiring and personally catalytic.

    (2) It is exceptionally well-written, using short paragraphs and deploying hyperlinks in a balanced and meaningful way.

    (3) It perfectly merges personal and universal perspective: it radiates the authentic and very real experiences of the author, while activating within ALL readers the part(s) of themselves that most need to hear what she is saying. Often the reader comes away with new ideas (related to both writing and to life).

The variety of topics from week to week keeps it interesting, current, and delicious.
  • Christina Katz... THEEE Writer Mama, of course!

    http://thewritermama.wordpress.com

Not only does she tell you how to get to work, she kicks your butt into high gear to actually put her suggestions into practice. This stop has become my new coffee house where I pull up a chair and sip a cup of encouragement on becoming a writer.

    Mrs. Jones

I "third" the nomination of Freelance Writing Gigs (http://freelancewritinggigs.com/)
  • Acid
I second the nomination of http://freelancewritinggigs.com/. It's a powerhouse of a resource for struggling freelance writers and deserves to be recognized.

I'd have to say that The Renegade Writer Blog would be my first pick as a 'top 10 writers blog'. Written by Linda Formichelli and Diane Burrell, authors of the book Query Letters that Rock, the blog is full of information about writing for both new and established writers. Plus they have a great new section, the Market Wiki where everyone can share information about magazine guidelines.

    Cheers,

    Liz

I'd like to nominate Deborah Ng's FWJ - http://freelancewritinggigs.com. Not because of the leads, great advice and helpful community, but because she's the nicest person I know.
  • I'd like to nominate CatalystBlogger http://catalystblogger.blogspot.com. She has only been blogging for a few months but always offers valuable insight and advice about life as a freelance writer, and I think she deserves the exposure.

Really. It might as well be me who nominates it.
  • Hm. Do we get to nominate our own blog? It'd sure be nice to hear that our blog over at www.jcme.ca/jcmefreelancewriting is good enough to make the cut!
