Arresting Headlines
By Michael StelznerThere has been much talk about headlines lately in my circles—and for good reason.
In a noisy world, good headlines are like mute buttons: They stop people in their tracks.
So I would like to show you and have you show me some excellent headlines.
The following are headlines that seem to have amazing staying power:
- The Top 10 Blogs for Writers
- How to Write a White Paper: A White Paper on White Papers
- What Keeps You From Writing?
- How to Improve Your Image by NOT Delivering
I will get into the theory behind these headlines in the future.
For now, please provide some of your best headlines (and links if you like).

SFGate online has some gems today, http://www.sfgate.com/
Like “Sushi Joint Offers Ribs” and “Oahu’s Chew Chew Train” and “Podcast with your Queen Bed.”

I haven’t had much luck with headlines. I think I’m to casual.
I took a shot with Lunchmeat, Tampons, and a Lawn Chair, thinking the bizarre nature might help. But no.
Still, I’m focusing more in this for the future.

Thanks for the mention, Mike. Here are a few of the headlines on my blog that have kept the posts alive:
What makes a great logo?
How do you write a graphic design brief?
5 easy steps to building trust online
12 money-saving questions to ask before printing your promotional material (long-winded, but gets the point across)
Top 7 blog mistakes to avoid
It seems that people love lists. A question in your headline also arouses curiousity, and those who read it may feel they’re able to answer it, or want to know the answer (so it works two ways).

From your own blog:
Dog Walks Like Man, No Joke
That was a good one. Stopped me in my tracks.

The quote should be “Dog Walks the Man”. Interesting and funny!
