4 Tips to Add Personality to Your Writing
By Michael Stelzner
Is your writing worse than dry toast?
Did you know you could spice it up a bit with a few proven tips?
Blogger Chris Garrett offers these nuggets:
Know Thyself
“Being yourself” means knowing what being yourself is like. One way to discover your “you-ness” is to understand your values, beliefs, philosophy. What are your priorities? This isn’t just important from a “personality” point of view but also it’s good to be consistent in your approach as people mistrust you if you contradict yourself.
Make It Personal
It’s important to include some personal details for people to feel they have connected with your personality. Also people are more likely to like people who have things in common. Those personal details are the bridges between you, common ground as it were.
Write Like You Talk
When you are speaking to someone you address them. You don’t talk “at” them, you talk “to” them. You ask questions, you give them space to reply, you tend to use natural language rather than “jargonese”.
Relax
The best advice is to relax. When you let your writing flow your personality will come through naturally.
So let’s get personal here.
I like to write less about my personal life, but I do like to write like I speak. This is not very hard for me as I am a “big talker.” (See I just got personal)

I think it is important to get personal if you want to gain trust. However, you have to be aware of how personal you’re getting. You want to filter the image you present to make sure you don’t get a bad rap. For example if you’re a web designer and you publicize that you’re on vacation six months out of the year, you might be telling everyone that you’re not going to be doing much work. On the other hand if your a hard working white paper writer who just wrote up a paper for a major engineering company and now your going on vacation for the first time in three years, that’s impressive.
