Placing Cart Before Horse Actually Works!

By Michael Stelzner

I frankly never heard anything like this!

So I’m a guest speaker on this call and a lady says, “My husband was asked to do a white paper as part of a contest for his employer…”

While I am listening, I am thinking, “Yikes!”

She said, “He couldn’t figure out what to write about. He decided to invent a product so he could write the white paper.”

“Wait,” I said, “He made up a product because he couldn’t decide what to write about??”

“Yes, and he is in the finals,” she explained.

The company is Deloitte.

And they seem to love the product idea he came up with.

Now her husband is thinking of writing another white paper to see if he has any “other” products inside him.

  • Over the years I have employed a similar process to break the writers block. It allows you to think outside of the box...who knows what you might come up with!
  • But will the customers like the product? I know, what a concept -- building products in response to marketplace needs.
  • What is interesting Ed is that the company was NOT looking for new product ideas.

It was an outcome of their contest.
  • I've heard of company growth initiatives that included contests for new product ideas, but never in association with white papers. Strange.
  • That's cool! Now I know what to do next time I'll have writers block.
