The New Rules of Marketing & PR

May 30th, 2007, by Michael Stelzner

David Meerman Scott has written a nice new book about grabbing attention, called The New Rules of Marketing & PR.

The subtitle is really what the book is all about: “How to Use News Releases, Blogs, Podcasting, Viral Marketing & Online Media to Reach Buyers Directly.”

For those of you who do not know David, he is a blogger over at Web Ink Now.

The book contains 275 pages of great information, including how to reach buyers directly via the web and how to develop an actionable marketing plan.

What caught my attention most was how David promoted the book.

He actually wrote a blog post mentioning all the folks that were instrumental in producing the book, with links to their blogs.

This created a firestorm of interest on the blogosphere, setting off a viral effect that launched the book into the top 3,000 on Amazon (I know personally how hard that is as I was there for maybe one day with my book).

Below is the list of folks that David mentioned (check out some of their blogs):

  1. David Meerman Scott Says:

    Hey Mike,

Thanks for taking the time to read my book and to write about it here.

Also, I really appreciiate your help on the white paper part of the book. Drawing on experts like you has made the book much better than it otherwise would have been.

Yes, the power of blogs is unbeleivable. The book has been hovering between 1,500 and about 6,000 in Amazon rank for a month. Given that the rank is updated every hour and the book is not even officially out yet (June 4 is publication date) it really shows the power of blogs and pre-publication blogger buzz. All authors should learn from this experience!

Thanks again for being a part of it!

    David

    David - Congrats! - Mike

  3. Bob Bly Says:

I am reading the book now and it is really terrific. David is becoming a leading advocate of content-based marketing, and his books teach effective strategies for selling products and services by giving away information. My only complaint is with the “New Rules” part of the title: giving away content is an old strategy we’ve been using for decades, way before anyone ever heard of the Internet.

  4. Michael Stelzner Says:

    Hey Bob;

    Thanks for stopping by!

As they say in TV, a rerun is new if you have never seen it.

A lot of folks are not aware that some of these new ideas are based on old concepts.
