Marketing Lessons from 2 Hawaiian Girls
By Michael StelznerWe landed in Maui for our second time in about 10 years.
After grabbing our luggage and working our way to the rental care area, I was struck by something—almost literally.
Two attractive Hawaiian girls were standing there.
One said, “Maps of Maui” with an outstretched hand.
The other said, “Coupons to restaurants” as she handed me a little booklet.
I tossed the coupons and kept the handout with the maps.
Now let’s face it.
These were really magazines full of nothing but advertisements and a few maps.
However, I had an immediate need and the maps were handed to me at the perfect location.
As I went to the rental car place, they also had different magazines with maps. However, I turned them away as I already had one I was happy with.
That map magazine stayed in my car the entire time I was in Maui.
At one point, one of my kids fell asleep in the car and what did I do?? I read that magazine from cover to cover.
What can be learned from this experience?
- If you can meet an immediate need, you will always have takers (think maps for confused travelers)
- It’s worth paying dollars to be in a traffic path
- You must first make an offer if you want someone to take it (think girls with hands out)
How can these lessons be applied in the online world?
