Two Birds of The Same Feather Don’t Always Fly Together

December 27th, 2006, by Michael Stelzner

This is a story of two pigeons. Both were born in the same nest and had the same schooling (heck, they were twins!).

Despite their external looks, they were very different birds.

Skip was determined to experience life to its fullest by making his home the place where he landed each night.

Pete planned to build a nest on the city’s tallest sky rise.

On January 1st, these two birds were forced to say bye-bye to the comforts of home.

Skip found a park. He went there for handouts and entertained the kids.

Pete decided to examine the city. He talked to birds all around town. He quickly learned that the local hospital was the up-and-coming place to start a nest.

Skip got bored of the park and started wandering around. He went from trash dumpster to back alley, looking for food and a good time.

Pete met a girl and built a little nest outside the maternity ward. After a few months, Pete traded his place for a bigger one uptown. Turned out the maternity nurses loved that nest. That brought a premium from his fellow fliers.

Now Skip got wind of a hot place down river. Having nothing to lose he decided to fly down and check it out.

Pete was busy with a family now (the year goes fast in pigeon time!). He was close to his dream of having a place on that sky rise.

Skip found a little shed near the shore and settled down. He figured waterfront property might fetch a good deal on the open market.

A few months later, a big storm rocked the city. Nearly 6 inches came down in 24 hours.

The rain kept coming. The river’s water level began to rise.

Pete was safe under a ledge uptown. Skip’s home was moving downstream.

Pete’s place was crowded, but he offered his bro a dry bed for a few nights.

Skip was happy to accept that offer.

The year went by and Pete was not on that sky rise. At least not yet.

Skip wasn’t sure what he was doing next.

A new year is here. Are you living life by the day? Or, do you have a dream?

What’s your story? Are you a Skip or a Pete?
