October 23rd, 2006, by Michael Stelzner

Do you write white papers? Do you WANT TO? Wondering about standards or pricing?

We are about to conduct our annual survey of hundreds of white paper writers. We could use your help formulating the questions.

What are some of the most pressing questions you would like to see in the survey?

Are you interested in these topics?

  • How independent writers charge for their services
  • The length of white papers
  • How much time is spent producing white papers
  • The use of special features (such as abstracts) in white papers
  • The processes involved in writing white papers
  • Why white papers are produced
  • How white papers are distributed
  • Philosophies adopted when writing white papers
  • The difficulty associated with different parts of the writing process
  • Challenges faced by white paper writers
  • The differences between independent and in-house writers

Help us determine what matters to you.

  1. Susan Weiner Says:

I’m interested in learning how other white paper writers price their work.

Sometimes I price by the hour, when the scope of the project isn’t well-defined.

Otherwise, my pricing is based on how long I think the paper will take to research and write.

Also, my financial expertise means that I can charge a premium over other writers tackling the same topics.

As someone who is just getting into the copywriting biz, I’m very interested in finding a niche and white papers have recently caught my eye. I’d really like to know how one, who is starting out, approaches clients in order to get work.

    Mike,
Do you have a niche of specialist expertise? Do you have good writing samples?
Both of those helped me get started.

  5. Mike Sieber Says:

Unfortunately I don’t have a background that I can draw from in order to target a niche. As far as my writing samples go, I think they’re pretty good, but I’m not a good judge of my own work. I do have a website with some samples, mikesieber.com, you can see if they’re worth anything.
